Holidays in Dominican Republic

The geography of the Dominican Republic is a little more heart-warming than its history! Fabulous beaches, crystal clear water, exotic vegetation and rivers tumbling down from high peaks set the scene. The two highest mountains in the Caribbean are found here in the Cordillera Central range, Pico Duarte and La Pelona. Humid sub-tropical forests swathe the slopes of the central mountains, whilst to the west the tropical forests become dryer and many areas are protected National Reserves.

Hispaniola is among the Greater Antilles, with the Bahamas to the north, Puerto Rico to the east, and Cuba and Jamaica to the west. The Atlantic washes against the north coast, whilst the Caribbean Sea laps the south coast. The Dominican Republic takes up the eastern two-thirds of the island, while Haiti occupies the western third.

The Dominican Republic is Spanish speaking and catholic, though you'll notice a lot of African influences, particularly on music and religion. Half the population live in the capital, Santo Domingo, on the south coast. Here, the old colonial district is well preserved, and boasts the first cathedral, court and paved street in the New World. However, the city has a flip side, and if you travel to the outskirts you'll come across slums and poverty, often inhabited by people who have moved in from the country looking for work. The government is trying to incentivise many of them to return to the country. Litter is a constant problem everywhere.

The climate is hot and humid, with an average daily temperature of 28°C throughout the year, and rarely falling below 18°C at night. If that sounds a little steamy, visit in the cooler months of January and February, and stay on the coast where there are refreshing breezes. The rainy season runs from October to May on the north coast, and May to October on the south coast, whilst hurricanes are possible from June through to November.
