The island of Formentera is one of the Mediterranean's unspoilt delights, where the azure seas are said to rival those of the Caribbean, and the golden sands rank among the best in the Balearics. Located south of Ibiza, Formentera is the smallest and most southerly of the Balearics. This unspoilt island has managed to retain much of its traditional culture and its slow pace of life, making it ideal for sun-seekers wanting to relax and experience more than just a beach holiday.
The whole coastline is bordered by beautiful beaches with fine golden sands - possibly the most beautiful are Cala Soana and Platja de Migjorn. Illetas and Levante beaches are located either side of the pinnacle of Formentera, boasting golden sands, and the widest range of watersports.
Shopping on the island is relatively low-key, with San Francisco Javier, the capital, having the biggest variety of shops. Es Pujols also offers a range of souvenirs shops, where ceramics are the local speciality.
Formentera is much quieter than its neighbour, Ibiza, and shares none of the nightlife for which this Balearic island is famous. Instead, evenings evolve around spectacular sunsets, delicious cuisine and long, lazy drinks. If your idea of a holiday is relaxing to the sound of lapping waves, you should visit Formentera!
