Alaior

With its beautiful beaches, rolling countryside and fascinating history, Minorca is a wonder of the Mediterranean. In the centre of the island, halfway between the island?s capital in the east and the main town of Ciutadella in the west, is the traditional farming village of Alaior. Tranquil and peaceful, it is a joy to travel to, and minutes away is one of Minorca?s best - and longest - beaches, Son Bou.

Founded in 1304, Alajor is a traditional Minorcan hillside town. The locals know it for its cheeses, its ice cream and its hand-crafted shoes. Visitors know it for the rich architecture of the church of Santa Eulalia, the church of Sant Diego, the hermitage of San Pedro, and the chapel of Gracia. They also know that as well as the pleasure of simply sitting down with a refreshing ice cream, taking in the glorious views, the beach of Son Bou is not far away. Popular for sunbathing and swimming, its pale gold sand and calm clear waters stretch away for almost 4km. So you can combine a true taste of Minorcan life in the town with long hours in the sun on the beach.
