Prepare yourself for the spectacular views as you enter the port, the glorious sunsets and a location surprisingly close to everything you'll want to see. On the east coast of Minorca, Mahon ? or Mao, as it is now becoming known ? has been a strategic maritime stronghold for centuries. The largest natural harbour in the world, it was made the capital of the island in the 18th century. Today, it retains a colonial air and is the gateway to the wonders of Minorca which stretch far over to the west coast. Mahon is a delight to explore and relax in, while the island itself measures only 50km long and 20km wide. Making everything on the island easy to find ? and easy to travel to.
Mahon has a very good pedestrianised shopping street, but if you'd like to take home a more unusual gift try a boutique along the waterfront, or the open-air market that takes place every Tuesday and Saturday at the Placa de S'Esplanada. Look out for pottery, leatherware and jewellery - all Menorcan specialities. Mahon's waterfront, is the place to see and be seen. There are several trendy bars and a wide choice of restaurants and tapas bars too: the atmosphere in the capital is a blend of culture and fun.
